How to Draw a Floor Plan of Your Home (Beginner Guide)
A no-CAD, no-jargon walkthrough of measuring a real home and turning it into an accurate floor plan you can actually use.

What do you actually need before you start measuring?
You don't need drafting tools. You need a steel tape measure at least 5m/16ft long, or better, a laser distance measure — they cost around $25–30, read to about 1.5mm (1/16in), and let one person measure a whole room alone instead of holding one end of a tape against a wall. You also need a clipboard, plain or grid paper, and a pencil with an eraser, because you will redraw lines as you go.
Add masking tape and a marker to label reference points on the floor (corner A, corner B), and use your phone camera as a backup memory. Photograph each wall right after you measure it and write the numbers on the photo with your finger or a note app. Two hours later, at your desk, you will not remember which number belongs to which alcove — the photo does.
Work one room at a time. Pick a fixed corner to start from, and move around the room in one direction (clockwise is easiest to keep track of) so you don't double back and lose your place.

How do you measure a room without the numbers coming out wrong?
Measure along the floor from wall surface to wall surface, not from baseboard to baseboard — skirting boards are often set back a few millimetres from the actual wall and that gap adds up across a room. For each wall, take the full length first, then break it into segments between fixed points: corner to window edge, window edge to door edge, door edge to corner. The segments should add up to the full length; if they're off by more than about 1cm (3/8in), remeasure.
Check that the room is actually square before you trust a rectangle shape. Measure both diagonals, corner to opposite corner. In a true 3.6m x 4.5m (12ft x 15ft) rectangle, both diagonals should be within about 1cm (1/2in) of each other. If they're not, the walls aren't at 90 degrees, and you should note the actual angle rather than force a square corner on paper.
Round to the nearest 5mm or 1/4 inch, not the nearest 10cm or inch. Rooms are usually made of several walls and openings measured separately, and rounding errors on each one stack up into a plan that's visibly wrong by the time you close the loop.
For doors, measure the width of the opening including the frame, and the height to the top of the frame. For windows, measure width, height, and the sill height off the finished floor — you'll need that last number later if you're planning furniture underneath.

What scale should you draw your floor plan at?
For US residential work, the standard is 1/4 inch = 1 foot (equivalent to 1:48). A 3.6m x 4.5m (12ft x 15ft) room becomes a rectangle roughly 7.5cm x 9.4cm (3in x 3.75in) on paper. In metric countries, 1:50 is the equivalent and easier to work out on grid paper: 1cm on paper = 50cm in the room.
If that math slows you down, use plain graph paper with 1 square = 1 foot, or 1 square = 10cm. It's less precise for a formal drawing but perfectly fine for a working field sketch, and you can always redraw to a strict scale afterward.
This step disappears entirely if you move to a digital tool early: you type in the real measurement for each wall and the software scales the drawing for you. That's worth knowing before you spend an hour with a ruler converting feet to inches on paper.

How do you draw the walls so the room shape is actually accurate?
Start with your longest exterior wall as a baseline — draw it first, at scale, and build everything else off it. Then draw each wall in the direction you walked when you measured it, point to point, using the segment lengths you recorded rather than the single overall figure. This is how you catch mistakes: if the walls don't close back into a shape near your start point, one segment is wrong.
Draw walls with their real thickness, not as single lines. A standard interior stud wall with drywall on both sides is about 114mm (4.5in) thick; an exterior masonry or brick-veneer wall is typically 230–250mm (9–10in). Skipping this and drawing walls as thin lines makes the floor area come out larger than the room actually is, which matters if you're ordering flooring or telling a contractor the square footage.
On a screen, this whole process is a lot less fiddly than it sounds on paper. Where do doors and windows go on the plan, and how do you mark them?
Measure the distance from the nearest corner to the edge of the opening, not its centre — corner-to-edge is what lets you (or anyone reading the plan later) place it correctly without guessing. Standard interior doors are 760–810mm (30–32in) wide and 2030mm (80in) tall; exterior doors are usually 914mm (36in) wide. Interior windows commonly sit with a sill height of 760–900mm (30–36in) off the floor, though older homes vary a lot — measure, don't assume.
Mark which way each door swings with a small arc on your sketch, and which way it opens (into the room or out). This sounds minor but it decides where furniture can go — a door that swings inward across a 900mm (3ft) gap eliminates that whole strip of floor for anything taller than a rug.
On a digital plan this step is one click: place the wall first, then drop the door or window onto it and it snaps into position and orientation, which removes the two most common paper-sketch mistakes — openings drawn at the wrong width, and swing direction left off entirely.

How do you turn a paper sketch into a plan you can actually use?
Once your field sketch has every wall length, every opening, and every diagonal check written on it, you have two honest options. If you only need something to hand a contractor for a quote, a clean redraw on graph paper with dimensions labelled is enough — contractors read dimensioned sketches all the time.
If you want to actually see the space before you commit to anything — check whether a sofa fits, whether a new door swing blocks a hallway, whether the kitchen island leaves enough clearance — redraw it digitally. What do you actually do with the finished floor plan?
A flat, dimensioned outline is useful for a contractor quote or a moving-truck estimate, but it stops being useful the moment you want to know if furniture fits. Once your plan is digital, furnish it with a catalogue of 3D models scaled to true real-world dimensions that snap flush to the walls, so a 2m (6.5ft) sofa against a 3.2m (10.5ft) wall shows you exactly how much room is left over — or hand the empty room to the AI and let it furnish the layout for you as a starting point.
From there, stand the plan up into 3D and walk through it. This is where you catch problems a flat plan hides: a door that swings into a walkway, a window that ends up behind a wardrobe, a hallway that reads fine on paper but feels tight at eye level.
When you're happy with a layout, capture a photorealistic image from any viewpoint in that 3D view — useful for comparing options before you buy furniture, or for showing a landlord or partner what you're proposing instead of describing it. A few renders a day are free; credits only come into play for edits, extra angles, or premium models.
What mistakes actually ruin a DIY floor plan?
Measuring baseboards instead of the wall surface is the most common one — it shifts every dimension by a small, consistent amount that compounds across a room. Close behind it: forgetting wall thickness entirely, which inflates your floor area and can make a piece of furniture look like it fits when it won't.
Assuming every corner is 90 degrees is another. Older homes especially drift out of square by several centimetres over a room's width — that diagonal check from earlier is what catches this before it becomes a redraw.
People also measure a window's outer frame when they mean the opening (or vice versa), which throws off blind and curtain measurements later, and they forget to note sloped ceilings, chimney breasts, radiators, and built-in cupboards — all of which eat usable floor space but don't show up if you only draw the outer wall shape.
Last one: not writing measurements down as fixed numbers at the time. "About 3 metres" from memory an hour later is not a floor plan you can trust for anything beyond a rough guess.
Common questions
Do I need to draw a floor plan to scale?
Only if you're using it for anything precise, like ordering flooring, buying furniture, or getting contractor quotes. A rough, dimensioned sketch is fine for a quick reference, but scale (1/4in = 1ft, or 1:50 metric) removes guesswork once you start placing objects in the space.
What wall thickness should I use if I can't measure it exactly?
Use 114mm (4.5in) for standard interior stud walls with drywall on both sides, and 230–250mm (9–10in) for exterior masonry walls, unless you can confirm otherwise. These are the most common defaults in residential construction and will get your floor area close enough for most uses.
Can I draw a floor plan just using my phone?

How accurate does my plan need to be for a contractor quote?

What if my room isn't square?
Measure both diagonals corner to corner. If they're not within about 1cm (1/2in) of each other, the room isn't square, and you should draw the actual angle instead of forcing a rectangle. Many older homes are off by several degrees and it matters for anything you plan to fit tight against two walls.
